I spent a decade studying human connection—what makes us feel connected, what gives us a sense of belonging, and why do we experience shame, fear, and vulnerability. The research led me to one surprising conclusion: vulnerability is not weakness. In fact, it is the most accurate measure of courage.
Here’s what I learned. People who embrace vulnerability are not people who fall apart in crisis. They are people who show up and say, “I want to be seen, even though there are no guarantees.” They are willing to say “I love you” first, to start a business, to have a difficult conversation, even when they’re terrified of the outcome.
The key to living a wholehearted life is the willingness to be imperfect. When we stop caring about what people think, we lose our capacity for connection. But when we’re willing to risk being vulnerable—sharing a creative idea, raising our hand in a meeting, or saying “I don’t know”—we open the door to authentic relationships and meaningful work.
Courage starts with showing up and letting ourselves be seen. It requires us to be honest about our feelings, to share our stories, and to connect with others in ways that might feel uncomfortable. That is the true definition of bravery.
