BBC 6 Minute English — The Power of Poetry(诗歌的力量)

For some, poetry is what you study at school, then forget, while for others it becomes an important part of their life. Poetry can help you connect with others, come to terms with personal emotions, and even heal.

Maria is a BBC reporter who sometimes performs at open mic nights — live events where anyone is allowed to stand on stage to sing or recite poems. She wrote a poem about a friend who suffered a stroke: “You’re awake and trying to grasp who it is. I pull my mask past my lips and you study my face, eyes wide.” For Maria, poetry has the power to touch your soul, meaning to affect you deeply on an emotional or spiritual level.

Hot Poets is a group helping people understand the science behind global issues like climate change. They listen to scientific papers being presented, then write and perform poems about them. Environmental scientist Kat Bruce explains that a lot of scientific jargon — specialist or technical vocabulary — is quite impenetrable to normal people, making it a turn-off. But poetry can make complex ideas easy to understand. When Kat heard the poem based on her research, she said: “It still gives me goosebumps. I think it’s everything that I wish I could say and put into words myself.”

BBC 6 Minute English 的对话中有一个技巧值得学习:当 Maria 描述她的诗歌时,节目没有只说”这是一首关于中风的诗”,而是直接引用了诗句:“You’re awake and trying to grasp who it is. I pull my mask past my lips and you study my face, eyes wide.”
