Can Your Wi-Fi Router Recognize You?

Security researchers from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany have made a startling discovery. Standard Wi-Fi routers can identify individual people with 99.5% accuracy — even when the person carries no phone or any other connected device. The technique, called BFId, works by analyzing “beamforming feedback information” (BFI), a signal that Wi-Fi routers use to improve connection quality.

Beamforming is a standard feature in modern Wi-Fi routers. It helps focus the wireless signal toward the devices that need it, rather than broadcasting in all directions. To do this, the router constantly exchanges tiny data packets with nearby devices, mapping the surrounding environment. The researchers found that these signals bounce off walls and human bodies in unique ways. Each person creates a slightly different “shadow” in the radio waves, just like a fingerprint or a silhouette.

The team tested their system on 197 participants and achieved near-perfect identification. Even when people tried to disguise themselves — changing their walking speed or carrying different objects — the system still recognized them with over 95% accuracy. What makes this particularly concerning is that BFI data is not encrypted. Anyone with a standard Wi-Fi adapter and a laptop can capture these signals from a distance. The router itself becomes a surveillance device without the owner even knowing it.

The researchers are now calling for stronger privacy protections. They argue that router manufacturers should encrypt BFI data, or at least give users the option to disable beamforming feedback. As one researcher put it: “If you walk past a café with a Wi-Fi network, you could be identified without noticing it. Your router may know more about you than your closest friends do.”

  1. “made a startling discovery” —

    • Example: Scientists have made a startling discovery about the health effects of sitting too long.
  2. “What makes this particularly concerning is…”

    • Example: What makes this particularly concerning is that users have no way to opt out.
  3. “without even knowing it” — 在毫不知情的情况下。

    • Example: Your personal data may be collected without you even knowing it.

    • Example: Environmental groups are calling for stricter regulations on plastic waste.
  5. “Your router may know more about you than your closest friends do.”

这篇新闻报道的开头用了一个非常有效的修辞手法:“even when the person carries no phone or any other connected device”(即使这个人没有携带手机或任何联网设备)。

“You might think [common assumption], but the truth is [surprising fact].”
