(Delivering Bad News at Work)」。
Emma: Tom, thanks for making time. I want to be straight with you — this isn’t easy to say. You know the board has been reviewing the budget all month. Unfortunately, they’ve decided to wind down the Atlas project at the end of next quarter.
Tom: Wow. I’m not going to lie, that’s a shock. We just hit our biggest milestone.
Emma: I know. And honestly, the decision had nothing to do with the team’s performance. Your work has been outstanding — the numbers were there. It’s a strategic call about where the company is heading.
Tom: So what happens to the team?
Emma: That’s exactly what I wanted to talk through. Nobody is being let go. We’re redeploying people onto the Horizon launch, which needs design help urgently. I’ve already spoken to Priya — she’d love to have you.
Tom: Okay. That’s… a relief, I suppose. When would I move over?
Emma: We’d transition you over the next six weeks, so you can hand over your current work properly. I’ll make sure you’re supported through the change — and if you have concerns, my door is open.
Tom: I appreciate you telling me face to face. Most managers would have sent an email.
Emma: You deserved better than that. You’re one of my strongest people, Tom — this is about the project, not you. Please don’t take it personally.
Tom: I won’t. Thanks, Emma. Honestly, it helps to hear it that way.

I’m afraid / unfortunately / we’re going to have to
必须用上 I’m afraid 和 unfortunately,且不能直接说 “We are late”。
② “We need to cut your budget.” ③ “Your report is late.” ④ “I don’t agree.” ⑤ “No.” 用上 I’m afraid / I see it differently / we’re going to have to。
用上 face to face / take it personally。
(The Bad-News Tone)
练习:把 “Unfortunately, they’ve decided to wind down the Atlas project.”
(Pause Before the Punch)
- 坏消息要「铺垫 + 停顿 + 抛出」:“I want to be straight with you — (停 0.5 秒) this isn’t easy to say.”
(Weak Forms & Linking)
- “I’m afraid” → /aɪm‿əˈfreɪd/(afraid 的 a- 弱读)
- “want to” → /ˈwɒnə/(口语常读成 wanna);“going to” → /ˈɡənə/(gonna)
- “tell‿you” → /ˈtel‿juː/;“hit‿our” → /ˈhɪt‿aʊə/;“about‿the” → /əˈbaʊt‿ðə/
(Sentence Stress)
- 只重读实义词:“It’s a STRATEGIC call about where the COMPANY is HEADING.”
5. 咬舌音 /ð/(The TH Sound)
- the / they / that / this 练习:“the board — the team — the numbers — the Horizon launch” 连续 10 遍,不要发成 /d/ 或 /z/。
(Empathy in Short Phrases)
- “I know.” / “I understand.” / “That’s a fair question.”
“Nobody likes to hear bad news — but how you deliver it decides whether they hear it, or just hear you.”
